Usability: Practical Definition. Hard Core of UX Design - englesdoony1936

Summary

  • We'll define usability in an scholarly path
  • Consider the problems with IT
  • And provide a shorter, actionable meaning of useableness.

Promise

Subsequently reading the article, you'll:

  • know how to wont the term usability in a correct way
  • acknowledge when people function it vicious (and feel a smarter somebody)
  • tell academic usability experts from the applicable ones.

What Is Usability?

Usability is system of measurement, a total. What does it mean?

Information technology substance we should measure usability to know if it's high surgery low. If we tote up or remove a feature, we should rhenium-measurement usability again.

What exactly should we measure?

Traditional Definition of Usability

According to Jacob Nielsen, serviceability industry's prophet, on that point are 5 components to appraise:

  • Learnability: for the first time users, how easy IT is to learn?
  • Efficiency: for repeating users, how fast is it?
  • Memorability: how effortless is it to remember?
  • Errors: how some errors users suffice?
  • Satisfaction: how pleasant is it to use?

Problem with Usability Definition

It's a hell of measuring.

When you add a feature, you have to run multiple tests, more or less of them are long. Get hold of memorability: how long are you prepared to wait before re-testing the boast?

Worse, if you create the whole new app surgery redesign an existing one.

Example of Redesign

Regard our past redesign of Icons8:

redesigning for better usability case study Old web app for icons

It's well-tested for usability. In particular, I've tested these tasks:

usability tests case study Approximately of the tests that I've keep going this design. There are more for the collections.

I find this ripe. When I've shown it to the cool guys from Clay, they said it's "pretty okay." I credit entry them for being polite.

Here's what we've come with:

icons app redesign case study One of the iterations of the redesign of our icons app

This design is a vast betterment.

  1. Information technology's looking at aged, thanks to Kyrilo, our UX designer.
  2. Alternatively of the left pull panel for icon inside information, we've got the inline (glorious by Google Images). The theory keister it was offered aside our friends from Usethics: touching attention between the list of icons and the unexhausted control panel is a hard job and the better germ of the psychological feature load. Survive nearer, they said.
  3. We've redesigned the collections, providing a shortcut for the default "Favorites" collection.

Should we run completely the usability tests for this redesign, IT will bring 30 measurements non count the collections. Collections will easily double that.

Let me supply a Sir Thomas More univocal set of metrics. I find it brassy, dirty, and good enough.

Practical Definition of Usability

For me, usability is a limit of three metrics. Army of the Righteou's call information technology Sucers :

  • Success
  • Errors
  • Speed.

From these 3, you single have to test 2:

  • Success — test it
  • Errors — test it
  • Speed — don't test it.

Sucers Explained

Here we go with our expanded definition.

1. Usability Is a Success Rate

Serviceableness is a value. Usually, it's a success rate for a given task.

Example: if 80% of users posterior buy a product, usability is 80%. Commonly, it's a tenor value.

2. Usability Is the Number of Errors

It could be the issue of errors that users made. How long did a exploiter wander all over the website in front successfully ordering her product?

3. Usability Is Accelerate

Or, information technology could be the speed. In real world, I never use information technology. In part, because IT's much harder to measuring rod. It requires many tests, and the results aren't accurate.

IT makes sense to endow the resources in eliminating the errors and adding some heuristics. To focal ratio up:

  • Few errors (atomic number 3 in #2)
  • Fewer clicks
  • Fitt's law
  • Thomas More shortcuts

What to Measure out

Back to our example with our icons web app, we have to mensurate only two things:

  • How many people behind full-scale the tasks?
  • How many errors do they make on the mode?

All it takes are 10 measurements, down from 30.

For speed, we use the heuristics:

  • Showing the icon details midmost of the icons grid, we are doing good
  • Adding a shortcut icon for adding to an icon to the Favorites collection, we're doing good.

Call information technology a day.

Your Turn

How do you guys mental testing your apps? Showing it to your wife counts as testing, likewise as a formal testing science lab equipped with a one-view mirror. Share your examples in the comments.
