How To Draw Heads Side View
The Bones Forms
To depict the head from whatever angle you lot must first sympathise its basic structure. Look past all the distracting details and visualize the underlying forms. This ability to simplify can be applied to the features of the face, but when starting the drawing yous could look even further. Ignore even the features and simplify to the most basic form of the caput. I use a method taught past Andrew Loomis in his volume, "Drawing the Head & Hands".
The head deconstructed into its basic forms, is a sphere as the cranium and a block as the jaw and cheek bones.
A Sphere as the Cranium
The sides of the head are flat, so we can slice off a piece from both sides of the ball. From contour, this plane will be a perfect circumvolve, but when drawing information technology from whatever other angle, it will announced to be an oval because of perspective. Split up this oval into quadrants. The vertical line represents the beginning of the jaw. The horizontal line represents the brow line. The acme and lesser of the oval help you notice the hair line and the bottom of the nose.
A Cake as the Jaw and Cheek Bones
Adhere the shape of the jaw. The pinnacle will outset at the brow line and the back will start at the center of the oval. This is a iii-D volume with a forepart plane, side planes, and bottom plane (bottom plane is seen from some angles).
Constructing From Whatsoever Bending
Pace i – Determine the bending of the brawl
The angle of the head is established at the very get-go of the drawing with the ball. All 3 axes must be addressed:
X Axis - The upward and downward tilt is established by the angles of the horizontal and vertical lines in the oval. Also, on extreme up tilts and downward tilts, the thirds volition be foreshortened considering of perspective.
Y Axis - The direction the caput is turning (left or correct) is established by the width of the oval. Equally the head turns towards you, you can run into more of the front of the face and less of the side, so the oval representing the side volition go narrower. Similarly, when the head turns away from you lot, more of the side airplane is revealed and the oval will announced wider.
Z Axis - The twist is established past the angle of the center line, the angle of the oval and the placement of the oval on the ball.
Pace 2 – Find the thirds
After establishing the angle of the ball, divide the face into thirds. The distance between the hairline and brow-line should be the aforementioned equally the altitude between the brow-line and lesser of the nose. Add that aforementioned distance to detect the chin. Observe how the hairline and nose-line marshal with the top and bottom lesser of the oval when wrapped effectually the confront. Imagine the caput as a box. The thirds must be wrapped around the side plane and front plane.
Step 3 – Add the jaw
A mutual fault at this betoken is to make the jaw also long in comparison to the ball. Brand sure to mensurate your thirds correctly and that they relate correctly to the ball. Detect how the shape of the jaw changes from diverse angles.
Pace four – Add the features
With this basic construction properly established, it becomes much easier to add the features in the correct place. Bank check dorsum for more than information near specific features in a later mail.

Practice inventing the caput from all possible angles. Get a sketchbook and fill an entire page with little heads. When drawing without reference photos, y'all chop-chop realize where your weaknesses are considering yous can't rely on copying. You tin just work with what you know.
